Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
