Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
