A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
